  <abstract>
    <para>Distributed computational environments provide heterogenous environments,
which are under different administrative domains. As such, each execution com-
ponent may have a different configuration and installed software. Information
systems describing the software installation are mostly manually administrated,
and as such are often incomplete or out of date.</para>
    <para>In this paper we present an automated environment
to schedule and run test jobs in distributed execution environments. It offers a
plug-in system, which allows the users to add detection plug-ins for specific
software. It also provides a crawler tool which schedules and executes the test
jobs. In addition, it offers a query-API to select execution sites based on the
checked requirements.</para>
    <para>The paper concludes with a verification of the proposed software crawling system by
showing a survey of the installation of Java software in the EGEE Grid. This survey
checks for the installed version and correct installation of the Java software. It
provides a real-life test case for the proposed system.</para>
